Gondar, Ethiopia / St. Petersburg, Florida — [October 2025]
Ebed-Melech University (EMU) and the University of Gondar (UoG) have announced the signing of a formal partnership agreement establishing new pathways for academic collaboration, research exchange, and scholarship development between the two institutions.
This memorandum of understanding represents a strategic milestone in higher-education cooperation between Africa and the United States. The partnership aligns with both universities’ shared commitment to advancing access to quality education, promoting global research initiatives, and cultivating leadership grounded in ethical and community-centered values.
Founded in 1954 as the Public Health College and Training Centre, the University of Gondar stands as Ethiopia’s oldest medical training institution and one of East Africa’s most respected universities. Today, UoG encompasses colleges in medicine, business and economics, social sciences, technology, and agriculture, maintaining a distinguished record in community-based education and applied research that serves national and regional priorities.
Ebed-Melech University, headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a faith-based institution of higher learning dedicated to developing leaders of character through academic rigor, innovation, and service. EMU’s academic programs integrate scholarship with moral and spiritual formation, reflecting its guiding mission to prepare graduates who contribute meaningfully to society and the global workforce.
Under the new agreement, EMU and UoG will collaborate across several key areas:
- Scholarship Development: Establishing joint scholarship initiatives to support academically talented and economically disadvantaged students across Africa.
- Faculty and Research Exchange: Creating opportunities for faculty collaboration, research partnerships, and knowledge transfer between departments.
- Program Development: Exploring joint degree programs and short-term training opportunities in health sciences, business, technology, and leadership.
- Community Engagement: Strengthening community-based education models that combine academic learning with social impact and ethical leadership.
Leaders from both universities emphasized that this collaboration represents a forward-looking model for international partnership — one rooted in shared values of learning, service, and global citizenship.
“This partnership reflects our belief that education is a bridge — not only between nations, but between faith, knowledge, and purpose,” said Dr. Roxanne Kemp, President of Ebed-Melech University. “Together with the University of Gondar, we are building pathways that will empower students to transform their communities through informed, compassionate leadership.”
The EMU–UoG partnership underscores the increasing global emphasis on cross-border academic cooperation as a catalyst for innovation, research excellence, and sustainable development.
